How to Choose a Funeral Director in Mackay: A Family Guide to Prices, Water Cremation & Burial
Everything Mackay families need to know when choosing a funeral director, from what each type of farewell involves and what it really costs, to why The Gentle Way is the only funeral director in Mackay offering water cremation. If you need help today, our funeral directors in Mackay answer every call, 24 hours a day.

When someone you love dies, you are suddenly asked to make a lot of decisions, often within a day or two, and often while you are exhausted and grieving. One of the first, and most important, is choosing the funeral director in Mackay who will care for your loved one and guide your family through what comes next.
This guide is written to make that choice easier. It explains, in plain English, every type of farewell available to Mackay families, what each one involves, what it costs, and the questions worth asking any funeral home before you commit. Where it helps, we have added interactive charts so you can compare options at your own pace.
Choosing funeral directors in Mackay: what really matters
A funeral director does far more than arrange a service. From the first phone call, they bring your loved one into their care, complete the legal paperwork, register the death, organise permits and certificates, and coordinate every detail of the farewell, from the celebrant and music to the cemetery, venue and flowers. Choosing well means your family can focus on each other rather than logistics.
In our experience caring for families across Mackay and the Whitsundays, the things that matter most are:
- Being there when you call. Death does not keep business hours. You should be able to reach a real person at 2am, not a voicemail.
- Honest, published pricing. You should be able to see what a funeral costs before you pick up the phone, and receive a written, itemised quote with no pressure.
- Real choice. Water cremation, burial, a full service, a simple direct cremation, or a memorial later on. Your funeral director should offer the farewell that suits your family, not the one that suits their business.
- Local knowledge. Knowing Mount Bassett Cemetery, the local churches, the hospitals and the places that matter to Mackay families makes everything smoother.
- Unhurried care. Time to sit with your loved one, ask questions, and change your mind.
Those five things shaped how we built The Gentle Way Funerals, and they run through every service described below.
The only funeral directors in Mackay offering water cremation
The Gentle Way Funerals is the only funeral director in Mackay that offers water cremation. It is a gentle, flame-free alternative to traditional cremation, and for many local families it has become the most natural way to say goodbye.
Water cremation uses warm water and a small amount of natural alkaline minerals to return the body to its basic elements, the same natural process that happens slowly in the earth, carried out with care and dignity over a matter of hours rather than years. There is no flame, no smoke and no fossil-fuel burner. Afterwards, just as with flame cremation, your loved one's ashes are returned to you in an urn of your choosing.
How water cremation works, step by step
- Into our care. We bring your loved one into our care at our North Mackay funeral home, day or night, and take care of all paperwork, permits and certificates.
- A time to say goodbye. If you would like a viewing or a full funeral service first, we arrange it. If you would prefer something private, that is fine too.
- The water cremation. Your loved one is placed in a purpose-built stainless-steel vessel. A gentle flow of warm water and alkaline minerals does the rest, typically over around four to six hours. The vessel is used for one person at a time, so remains are never mixed.
- Ashes prepared. The remaining bone is carefully dried and reduced to fine, soft ashes. Medical implants such as hip and knee replacements are recovered clean.
- Returned to you. Your loved one's ashes are returned in a dignified urn, ready to keep, scatter or inter, and ready for a memorial whenever your family is ready.
Our water cremation system was designed and built in North Queensland, with water filtration built directly onto the machine. If you would like to understand the process more deeply before deciding, our guide What is water cremation? A gentle guide for Mackay families answers the most common questions, and the water cremation in Mackay page lists exactly what is included.
Water cremation, flame cremation and burial: the environmental picture
For many families, the environmental footprint of a farewell matters, particularly in a region as naturally beautiful as Mackay and the Whitsundays. The most widely cited independent comparison is a life-cycle assessment by the Dutch research organisation TNO, which compared burial, flame cremation and water cremation (alkaline hydrolysis) across a range of environmental measures. Use the buttons below to switch between them.
Global warming impact per farewell
kg of CO₂-equivalent per person. Lower is better; below zero means a net benefit.
View the data as a table
| Measure | Burial | Flame cremation | Water cremation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global warming (kg CO₂-eq) | 180.3 | 79.9 | −31.8 |
| Land use (m²·year) | 259.8 | 70.0 | 7.0 |
| Human toxicity (kg 1,4-DCB eq) | 115 | 54 | −77 |
| Acidification (kg SO₂-eq) | 1.35 | 0.67 | −0.34 |
On the measure most people care about, climate impact, the study found burial produced around 180 kg of CO₂-equivalent per person and flame cremation around 80 kg, while water cremation came out below zero in the study's model, reflecting that no fuel is burned and that recovered materials are credited back. Water cremation also used a fraction of the land. In fairness, the same study found water cremation scored slightly higher on one measure, eutrophication (nutrients in wastewater), which is why responsible water treatment matters, and why our system filters water on the machine itself.
None of this means burial or a traditional service is the wrong choice. Many Mackay families have deep ties to a family plot or a faith tradition, and we arrange burials with just as much care. It simply means that families who want the gentlest option for the environment now have one locally.
Every farewell, under one roof: our funeral services in Mackay
Water cremation is what we are known for, but it is only one part of what we do. As full-service funeral directors in Mackay, we arrange every type of farewell, and you can combine them however feels right.
1. Water cremation with a funeral service
Choosing water cremation does not mean giving up a funeral. Our Gentle Funeral Service ($5,500 inc GST) brings together everything families most often ask for: a viewing, a celebrant, printed service booklets, music, a video tribute, a casket with flowers and a signing book, followed by water cremation and the return of ashes in an urn. The service can be held at a church, the Mackay Botanic Gardens, a surf club, a community hall, a private property or the beach. Our ceremonies and celebrant page explains how we help shape a service that sounds like the person you have lost.

2. Traditional burial in Mackay
For many families, a graveside farewell and a place to visit are deeply important. Our burial service ($5,800 inc GST, plus council cemetery fees at exact cost) includes our professional service fee, transfer into our care, respectful mortuary care, a viewing, the death certificate, printed booklets, music, a video tribute, a celebrant, a solid Oak coffin with six handles, casket flowers and a signing book.
We arrange burials at Mount Bassett Cemetery, Mackay's council cemetery with lawn and monumental sections and columbarium walls; in existing family plots at the heritage-listed Mackay Cemetery on Cemetery Road, West Mackay; and at Walkerston, Sarina, Marian and Mirani West cemeteries. Cemetery fees are set by Mackay Regional Council and passed on at exactly what the council charges, with no mark-up.
3. Direct cremation, with no funeral service
Some people simply do not want a funeral. Others would rather spend the money on a gathering of their own, later and on their own terms. Our no funeral service option, the Simple Farewell, is a respectful, unattended direct water cremation from $2,640 inc GST. It includes transfer into our care, all documentation and permits, the water cremation itself, the official death certificate and the return of ashes in an urn. It is our simplest and most affordable farewell, carried out privately with exactly the same dignity and care.

4. Memorial services in Mackay
A memorial service is a celebration of life held after the cremation or burial, without the coffin present. Because there is no time pressure, families can wait for relatives to travel home, choose a meaningful date, and hold it anywhere: the Bluewater Quay, Town Beach, a favourite surf club, the backyard, or a quiet spot on the Pioneer River. Many families pair a Simple Farewell with a memorial a few weeks later, which keeps costs down while still giving everyone the chance to say goodbye together.

What changes the final price
The biggest factors are the type of farewell (water cremation, burial or no service), the coffin or casket, whether you would like a viewing, the venue, flowers and catering, and newspaper notices. For burials, cemetery fees are set by council and passed on at the exact cost.
Gentle ways to keep costs down
- Choose a Simple Farewell water cremation and hold a free gathering at home, a park or the beach afterwards.
- Pick a simple coffin, and hold the service somewhere that does not charge hire.
- Prepare your own photo tribute or music playlist.
- Ask us. We will always tell you honestly where you can save.
Help with paying for a funeral
Many banks will pay a funeral account directly from the deceased person's bank account if you ask. Services Australia may offer a bereavement payment to eligible partners and carers, and we offer payment plans for Mackay families who need them. If you are planning ahead, pre-paid funerals lock in today's prices and lift the financial burden from your family.
How Australians are choosing to say goodbye
of Australian funerals in the Australian Funeral Directors Association's industry trends report involved a cremation, about seven in every ten. Source: AFDA, Funeral Industry Trends Report (2022), based on more than 25,000 funerals.
Cremation is now the most common choice in Australia by a wide margin, and families are increasingly asking for farewells that are more personal, more flexible and kinder to the environment. That is exactly why water cremation is growing: it gives families everything they value about cremation, including ashes to keep or scatter and complete freedom over the service, with a far gentler process and footprint.
At the same time, burial remains meaningful for many Mackay families, especially those with family plots, strong faith traditions, or cultural customs that call for it. A good funeral director will never steer you one way or the other. Our role is to explain every option honestly and then carry out your wishes with care.
