When someone you love dies, money is often one of the first worries, and one of the hardest to ask about. Funeral pricing has long been confusing, so this guide gives you the real numbers in plain English: what a basic cremation costs across Australia right now, what is and isn't included, and what local families in Mackay and the Whitsundays can expect to pay.
The average cost of a basic cremation in Australia in 2026
A basic cremation is the simplest, most affordable way to say goodbye. Most funeral homes call it a direct cremation, a no-service cremation or an unattended cremation. Your loved one is brought into care, the paperwork is handled, the cremation takes place without a formal service, and the ashes are returned to the family.
The most comprehensive price check we could find was published in September 2026 by Funerals Direct, which compared the published direct cremation prices of 296 Australian funeral providers. It found:
- A national median of $3,648 for a direct cremation.
- The middle half of providers charge between $2,890 and $4,650.
- The lowest advertised price was $990 from a charity provider (with the crematorium fee extra), and the highest was $8,782.
Other 2026 price guides land in the same ballpark. Compare Funeral Directors puts a typical direct cremation at $2,500 to $5,500, and the Going Rate cost calculator estimates $2,600 to $3,550 for a basic package with ashes returned and a death certificate.
So when people ask "what is the average cost of a basic cremation service in Australia?", the honest answer is around $3,600, with most families paying somewhere between $2,900 and $4,700 depending on where they live and what is included.
Basic cremation costs by state and city
Where you live makes a real difference. Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales are the most expensive states for a basic cremation, while Queensland and South Australia are noticeably cheaper. Use the tabs below to explore the numbers.
Queensland families generally pay less than the national average. Brisbane's median sits at about $2,750 and the Gold Coast's at about $2,999, while Newcastle ($3,750), Perth ($3,500) and Sydney ($3,498) are among the dearest cities in the survey.

What is included in a basic cremation?
Comparing prices only works if you are comparing the same things. Here is what a basic cremation usually covers, and what usually costs extra.
Usually included
- Transfer of your loved one into care
- Mortuary care and storage
- A simple coffin
- Cremation permits and paperwork
- The cremation itself
- Return of ashes in a basic container
Often extra
- A funeral service, chapel or venue
- Viewing or family time
- Celebrant, flowers and printed booklets
- Death certificate (sometimes)
- After-hours or weekend transfers
- The crematorium fee (with some providers)
That last point catches many families out. When Funerals Direct checked 313 advertised prices, only 198 clearly stated that the crematorium fee was included. Crematorium fees alone range from about $510 to $1,838 depending on the crematorium, so always ask.

The cremation fee is the biggest single cost, at around 40% of the total.
Basic cremation vs a funeral service vs burial
A basic cremation is usually the most affordable choice by a wide margin. Once you add a chapel service, a celebrant, a hearse and flowers, costs climb quickly, and burial adds cemetery fees on top.
A basic cremation doesn't have to mean no goodbye. Many families choose a direct cremation and then hold their own gathering, at home, at the beach or at a favourite park, or a memorial service once the ashes are returned. If a traditional farewell matters to you, our ceremonies and celebrant and burial service pages explain those options.

Queensland law is on your side
Since 1 July 2022, the Fair Trading (Funeral Pricing) Regulation 2022 requires Queensland funeral directors to display their least expensive package and an itemised price list on their website and at their premises. If you ask for an itemised quote, it must be provided within 48 hours or before you sign. Ours is always on our pricing page.

How to keep cremation costs down (without cutting corners)
Saving money on a farewell is not about caring less. These are the practical ways families we work with keep costs manageable:
- Choose a direct cremation and hold your own gathering. A beach, park or backyard costs nothing, and many families find it more personal than a chapel.
- Ask for the total, inc GST. A low headline price can grow once certificates, crematorium fees and transfers are added.
- Keep the coffin simple. A basic cremation coffin is perfectly dignified, and an upgrade can add $1,000 or more.
- Share notices online. A free Facebook post or our online funeral notices reach family quickly without newspaper costs.
- Make your own photo tribute. Family photos played from a laptop can be just as moving.
- Plan ahead. Funeral pre-planning or a pre-paid funeral lets you lock in today's prices and spare your family the decisions later.
